You want to pair that with a class that has a lot of action freedom. Monk is really good at that because being able to Flurry -> Impulse is very handy. You won't be doing Elemental Blast much, but you'll want to leverage a lot of the 2A impulses.
For 2e I'd expect gather power to appear in some form, the 3 action system is a perfect fit for it, probably closer to how magic missile or inner radiance torrent works than the 1e version though. The only ones that qualify, in my opinion, are water, earth, and aether. Put two points into Aether, and the rest into Earth which will give you a solid amount of regenerating hp, and DR on top of that.
