The symbol / indicates to the game you will enter a command rather than a message. The g at the end of command means it is intended for a guild. If your guild is less than a week old then you will have to wait before you can start earning guild XP. If over a week then just do anything that earns Conquest points. The more Conquest points you earn the more guild XP you will earn.

Certainly check out the guild Quiz url, a Check their guild forums or the server forums to see if they have a bad reputation of problem players. You'll probably get someone who invites you to their guild after the first time grouping with them even if you haven't said a word.
