I have a few Marlins where the JM was lightly or partially stamped.Heck,they completely missed the stamp on my 1947 Marlin 39A. Value is greater also but somewhat mitigated by the Ruger re-introduction of the SBL, however Ruger has now paused production on the 1895's while they build 336's so any SBL is valuable and desirable still. The "JM"stamp shows up on both the pre-1954 Ballard rifled barrels and the newer Microgroove barrels that started replacing those in '53 and later. Marlin brought back "Ballard" style rifling in some of their centerfire rifles in the 1990s.Now I've only been into Marlin's a couple years but I've bought and sold a few and looked at a few hundred. I haven't seen one yet that didn't have the stamp. If the gun was pre-remlin then wouldn't it have the JM stamp.
