The Red Eagle cyclothem, named for its principal limestone formation, includes the Johnson Shale, Red Eagle Limestone, and Roca Shale formations (Table 1). These rocks occur in the Council Grove Group of the Lower Permian (Wolfcampian) about 150 feet stratigraphically above the base of the system. Red shale within the Roca and Johnson ...This publication combines the interpretations of two major sets of data. One is the geophysical data that is used to interpret the position of the tectonic plates through geologic time.

Cyclothems. A cyclothem is a series of repeating sediments representing the transgression and regression of H2 O or the submergence and emergence of land. In coal-bearing strata, changes in depositional environment produced a cyclic repetition of beds. The cyclothem is defined as a series of beds deposited during a single sedimentary cycle. These cyclothems, previously termed megacyclothems, were described by Jewett (1945) and Moore (1949). Two of these cyclothems, the Altamont (facies I-III) and the Lenapah (facies III-VII), occur in core 4 from the Dirks # 2. Correlation of the seven core facies of the Dirks # 2 with formations and members of these cyclothems is shown in fig. 8.For example, cyclothems documented to dominate late Middle through Late Pennsylvanian strata in Midcontinent of North America, the Moscow Basin in Russia, the Donets Basin in Ukraine, and other low-latitude areas are interpreted as far-field effects of waxing and waning of Gondwanan ice sheets (Alekseev et al., 1996, Heckel, 2008, Eros et al ...In the present study, we carried out trace element analyses of black shales of the Ediacaran Doushantou Formation from two sections (Jiulongwan, Baiguoyuan) in Hubei Province, South China. It is important to understand the mechanism of organic matter accumulation in these shales to reconstruct the palaeoenvironment and palaeoclimate in the Early Cretaceous in northwestern China and search for potential oil and gas resources.Pennsylvanian cyclothems of Midcontinent North America represent a repetitive succession of widespread marine beds, upon which widespread paleosols in the overlying terrestrial beds show that they resulted from extensive marine regressions as well as transgressions over a large land surface.Cyclothems are repetitive stratigraphic sequences that are unique to the Pennsylvanian and earliest Permian periods within the US midcontinent. They formed as a result of marine transgressions and regressions as …A single thick, areally extensive coal is present at the top of some cyclothems, but several thick coals that split around shales and sandstones are present at this level in other cyclothems. 2.2. Depositional environments Several lines of evidence suggest that the Syd- ney Basin was subject to marine incursions during cyclothem formation.Fischer's classic study (1964) of the Upper Triassic "Lofer" cyclothems in the Dachstein Limestone of the Northern Calcareous Alps was seminal to many studies of the Dachstein and to carbonate cycles globally. Fischer's idealized cycle is deepening upward, ABC in his terminology, where member A is a surface or interval of subaerial exposure, B is tidal deposits, and C is shallow subtidal. The cyclothems examined in detail occur on the Eastern Shelf of the Midland basin in north Texas. Cyclothems are products of deposition in shelfwide mixed carbonate-siliciclastic systems and contain an intermediate water depth carbonate zone positioned between a shallow nearshore zone of siliciclastic deposition and a deep-water outer shelf ...Cyclothems can be rationalized as depositional sequences which are thin (metres to a few tens of metres), condensed, incomplete in terms of systems tracts, and top-truncated. In contrast, coeval sedimentary cycles deposited in continental, nonmarine settings have received comparatively little attention.6 Cyclothems. Now that some background information has been given, one who is not familiar with geology should be able to understand Wanless' biggest geologic contribution. The cyclothems are meter-scale in thickness and begin with a subtidal bed (Member C) represented by a peloidal dolostone with megalodonts (wackestone or packstone), being followed by a microbial-laminated (stromatolitic) intertidal dolomite and/or fenestral dolomitic mudstone of tidal-flat origin (Member B) that is overlain by dolocretes ...The data presented herein and the conclusions drawn therefrom are based largely on studies of core shales of Missourian Stage (lower Upper Pennsylvanian) Kansas-type cyclothems, especially the Hushpuckney and Stark shales in eastern Kansas and adjacent areas (Fig. 1; Algeo et al., 1997, Hoffman et al., 1998, Algeo and Maynard, ……
